Congratulations on making it through the end-of-year exams! The papers before the holiday break can indeed send any student’s stress levels running high, but now that everything’s over, how are you planning to relax and recover?

Here’s the thing, though: relaxing after a gruelling exam period isn’t as easy as it might sound. Many students find it hard to switch back to their regular mood and routine after a long period of sustained pressure and stress.

To help you get started on your post-exam recovery phase, we’re going to share some fun, lighthearted post-exam activities. These tips can help you recharge your body and brain to finish the year strong and be prepared for next year’s semester!

1. Let go of the exam pressure

The best way to relax after the year-end exams? Trusting in your own ability and being confident in your answers!

It’s easy to get caught up obsessing over your exam performance, but overthinking your answers won’t do you any good other than additional stress! Resist the urge to compare answers and notes with your classmates.

Obsessing over a single mistake results in unnecessary stress about something that you can no longer change. Once your last paper is over, let go of everything and get into the holiday break mood!

Say this to yourself upon exiting the examination hall: “I did my best and I’m proud of what I did.”

2. Get a massage

Don’t know how to reward yourself after the exams? You can never go wrong with getting a massage!

Look for a nearby spa or parlour and get an appointment for a neck and shoulder massage, or a full-body massage if you want! A relaxing massage will loosen up everything that became stiff and tense during the revision period while you’re slumping over your study desk for hours on end!

The best thing is, massages are cheap and you can get deals online!

3. Grab a celebratory meal

Is there anything better than celebrating the end of the exams with a good, well-deserving meal?

Treat yourself to a nice meal as a way of rewarding yourself for surviving the weeks-long and stressful exam period, regardless of how you deem your performance.

Trust us, after weeks of fast food, instant noodles, and iced coffee, your first real meal after the exam period will taste like heaven! Even if it’s just a hot bowl of laksa from your go-to hawker stall.

4. Catch up on sleep

Maintaining a regular sleeping schedule during the exam period is important. However, we all know that your nights were spent studying and stressing about whether you’re retaining any information.

After the smoke has cleared, it's equally important to catch up on the rest and sleep you’ve lost the past few weeks.

Now that you have the luxury of time, get some quality sleep, hit that snooze button, and recuperate all you need to give yourself the energy to do more things this holiday break!

5. Pick up a new hobby

Studying for an entire year can take its toll on your physical and mental health. The first few days after the exam period is the perfect time to reacquaint yourself with old hobbies or learn new ones.

Forget the exams and get involved in something new! Take up a new language, learn a new sport, or get into arts and crafts!

Art and craft activities like painting and knitting encourage self-expression and sharpen creativity, which is known for minimising anxiety, improving self-esteem, and reducing stress!

The simple act of getting into a new hobby and creating something you’ve never done before allows you to wash away your stress and anxiety.

6. Reconnect with nature

After spending weeks (or months) confined to your room and campus, now’s the perfect time to spend some time in nature and give yourself a much-needed break from all the screen time.

Plan a hike in one of Singapore’s hiking trails, enjoy the weather, and feel all your stress just melts away.

Hiking is one of the best stress-relief activities that any student can do. It’s a relaxing combination of exercise, gorgeous natural settings, and the liberty of being alone to clear your mind for hours.
