Primary Chinese Tuition in Singapore

扎实华文基础 · 成就 PSLE 卓越表现

Our Primary Chinese Tuition programme follows the latest Singapore MOE Chinese Language Syllabus (新加坡教育部小学华文课程), helping students progressively strengthen listening, speaking, reading and writing skills (听、说、读、写), while developing vocabulary (词语运用), reading comprehension (阅读理解), composition writing (作文), oral communication (口试) and confident language application from Primary 1 to Primary 6.

Our Primary Chinese Tuition programme follows the latest Singapore MOE Primary Chinese Language Syllabus (2024 小学华文课程标准). The learning objectives, language skills and curriculum coverage presented throughout this page are aligned with the Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD), Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore.

The Singapore MOE Primary Chinese Language Syllabus offers three learning pathways: Standard Chinese (华文), Higher Chinese (高级华文) and Foundation Chinese (基础华文, introduced from Primary 5). Aspire Hub provides Primary Chinese Tuition across all three programmes, adapting lessons to each student's learning needs and school requirements. Unless otherwise stated, the learning objectives and character targets referenced on this page follow the Standard Chinese (华文) syllabus.

奠基阶段(第一阶段)|识字、写字、听说与基础语言能力

Primary 1 and Primary 2 form the first stage of the Foundation Phase (奠基阶段) in the Singapore MOE Primary Chinese Language Syllabus. During this stage, our Primary Chinese Tuition programme focuses on developing strong foundations in listening (聆听), speaking (口语), character recognition (识字), handwriting (写字) and Hanyu Pinyin (汉语拼音). Students gradually build confidence in recognising, reading and writing Chinese characters while developing the language skills needed for later reading comprehension and composition.

Alongside language acquisition, students cultivate positive learning habits, curiosity and confidence in using Mandarin for everyday communication. The 2024 MOE syllabus also places strong emphasis on nurturing an appreciation for the Chinese language and encouraging lifelong reading from an early age, laying the foundation for future success in Primary Chinese and Higher Chinese.

Singapore MOE Chinese Language Syllabus | Language Skills(语言能力

The Singapore MOE Primary Chinese Language Syllabus develops five core language skills that students build progressively throughout Primary school. At the Primary 1 and Primary 2 level, Aspire Hub’s Primary Chinese Tuition focuses on establishing strong language foundations before students progress to more advanced reading comprehension, composition writing and oral communication in the upper primary years.

P1 and P2 students sit school-based assessments covering listening, oral communication, reading comprehension, character recognition, and writing. We prepare students for all components, with particular emphasis on Hanyu Pinyin, character writing, and oral communication.

How Aspire Hub Supports Primary 1 & 2 Chinese Learning

01

Hanyu Pinyin Mastery & Accurate Pronunciation

Students build strong pronunciation through systematic Hanyu Pinyin instruction, mastering initials, finals and tones. Accurate pronunciation provides the foundation for confident listening, speaking and reading throughout primary school.

02

Character Recognition & Proper Handwriting

Students learn Chinese characters through structured recognition, radical and component analysis, and regular handwriting practice. We emphasise correct stroke order, character structure, and consistent revision to build long-term retention and writing accuracy.

03

Confident Oral Communication

Students develop confidence in spoken Mandarin through storytelling, guided conversations, role-play and classroom discussions. Regular speaking practice improves fluency, sentence formation and communication skills in authentic situations.

04

Reading Comprehension & Vocabulary Growth

Students expand their vocabulary while developing reading comprehension through stories, short passages and age-appropriate texts. Teachers guide students to identify key information, understand sentence meaning and build strong reading habits.

Primary 3 & 4: Developing Reading Comprehension, Writing & Language Application

奠基阶段(第二学习阶段)— 阅读理解、写作能力与语言运用

Primary 3 and Primary 4 form the second stage of the Foundation Phase (奠基阶段) in the MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus. Building on the fundamentals established in P1 and P2, students develop stronger reading comprehension, vocabulary application, sentence construction and paragraph writing skills. They learn to understand a wider range of text types, organise ideas logically and communicate more accurately in both spoken and written Chinese.

At this stage, students are encouraged to think more critically by making inferences, expressing opinions and supporting their responses with appropriate evidence from texts. These skills prepare students for the more advanced language demands of the upper primary years and the PSLE Chinese examination.

MOE Syllabus — Language Skills (语言能力)

The Chinese Language Syllabus develops five language abilities. The following skills are developed at this level group.

P3 and P4 assessments place greater emphasis on reading comprehension, language application, oral communication and paragraph writing. Students are expected to understand different text types, apply vocabulary accurately and organise ideas clearly. Our lessons develop the reading, writing and communication skills needed for a smooth transition to upper primary Chinese.

How Aspire Hub Develops Confident Chinese Learners at Primary 3 & 4

01

Reading Comprehension Strategies

We teach students structured reading comprehension strategies to identify key information, make logical inferences and understand different text types. Through guided annotation and discussion, students learn to explain their answers with confidence and accuracy.

02

Structured Paragraph Writing

Students learn how to organise ideas into clear, coherent paragraphs using appropriate vocabulary, sentence structures and linking phrases. Teachers provide step-by-step guidance to strengthen written expression and language accuracy.

03

Vocabulary Expansion & Language Application

We systematically expand students’ vocabulary through reading, contextual learning and language practice. Students learn how to apply new words naturally in reading comprehension, oral communication and writing instead of memorising vocabulary lists.

04

Confident Oral Communication

Students develop confidence in spoken Mandarin through structured conversations, picture discussions, storytelling and classroom interaction. Regular speaking practice improves fluency, pronunciation and the ability to express ideas clearly using appropriate vocabulary.

Primary 5 & 6

定向阶段 — PSLE华文备考与综合语言能力

Primary 5 and 6 mark the Orientation Phase (定向阶段) of the MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus — the final two years before the PSLE Chinese examination. Our Primary 5 Chinese tuition and Primary 6 Chinese tuition programmes are built around this stage’s demands: comprehensive development across all six language abilities, with added emphasis on oral interaction and written interaction alongside listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students learn to read and respond to a wider range of text types, produce well-structured compositions, and communicate with fluency and precision in Mandarin — the standard our PSLE Chinese tuition prepares students to meet across all four components of the exam.

The PSLE Chinese examination tests all four components — Oral Communication (口试), Listening Comprehension (听力理解), Reading Comprehension (阅读理解), and Composition Writing (写作) — and requires students to demonstrate both linguistic accuracy and communicative competence. Our Primary 5 and 6 Chinese tuition classes work through each component systematically, so students enter the exam hall having practised every skill area under realistic conditions.

MOE Syllabus — Language Skills (语言能力)

The Chinese Language Syllabus develops six language abilities — 聆听 (Listening), 说话 (Speaking), 阅读 (Reading), 写作 (Writing), 口语互动 (Oral Interaction), and 书面互动 (Written Interaction). Our Primary 5 and 6 Chinese tuition addresses all six through the skills developed at this level group below.

Listening(聆听)

1,800–1,900

Characters to Recognise

识字 (cumulative)

950–1,000

The PSLE Chinese examination comprises Oral Communication (口试) — Reading Aloud (朗读) and Video-Based Conversation (会话) — Listening Comprehension (听力理解), Reading Comprehension (阅读理解), and Composition Writing (写作). Students may sit the examination at Standard (华文), Higher (高级华文) or Foundation (基础华文) level. Our PSLE Chinese tuition prepares students for all levels and all components, including realistic e-oral practice under video-stimulus conditions.

How Our Primary 5 & 6 Chinese Tuition Helps

01

PSLE Chinese Preparation — All Components

Our Primary 5 and 6 Chinese tuition prepares students for all four components of the PSLE Chinese paper: Oral Communication (口试) — including Reading Aloud (朗读) and Video-Based Conversation (会话) — Listening Comprehension (听力理解), Reading Comprehension (阅读理解), and Composition Writing (写作). Each component requires distinct skills, and we train students systematically for all of them, using realistic exam conditions so nothing about the format feels unfamiliar on exam day.

02

Composition Writing Excellence

We help students develop a strong compositional voice in Chinese for PSLE Chinese composition — from vivid scene-setting and character development to a satisfying resolution. We teach students to use varied sentence structures, appropriate idioms (成语), and precise vocabulary to elevate their writing, whether they choose the picture composition (看图作文) or the scenario-based/guided composition (命题作文) format.

03

Reading Comprehension and Critical Analysis

PSLE Chinese comprehension passages require students to read critically — identifying the writer’s purpose, understanding implicit meaning, and evaluating information. We train students to construct well-supported answers using precise Chinese language, covering both the Language Use and Comprehension (语文应用与理解) section and open-ended comprehension question types found in the PSLE Chinese paper.

04

Oral Communication Coaching

The PSLE Chinese Oral exam uses the e-oral format introduced in 2017: Reading Aloud (朗读, 20 marks) and Video-Based Conversation (会话, 30 marks), where students respond to a short video clip rather than a static picture. We conduct regular oral practice sessions under video-stimulus conditions, providing structured feedback on pronunciation, fluency, expression and the ability to express and defend opinions clearly in Mandarin.

OUR APPROACH TO CHINESE

Building a Genuine Love for the Chinese Language.

Chinese language learning is most effective when students develop a genuine connection to the language — not just as a subject to be passed, but as a rich medium of communication, culture and expression. At Aspire Hub, our Primary Chinese tuition cultivates this connection alongside rigorous academic preparation.

Our coaches are trained in the PSLE Chinese paper format and the MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus, including the 2024 revision as it rolls out progressively from Primary 1 onward. We support students across all three course tracks — Standard (华文), Higher (高级华文) and Foundation (基础华文) — with dedicated Higher Chinese tuition for students on the HCL track, and coaching tailored to each student’s level and learning goals.

FAQs for the Primary Chinese Tuition at Aspire Hub

What is Primary Chinese tuition at Aspire Hub?

Aspire Hub’s Primary Chinese tuition in Singapore follows the latest MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus, supporting students from Primary 1 to Primary 6 across Standard Chinese (华文), Higher Chinese (高级华文) and Foundation Chinese (基础华文).

Our programme develops all six language abilities — listening (聆听), speaking (说话), oral interaction (口语互动), reading (阅读), writing (写作) and written interaction (书面互动) — through our Aspire Coaching Framework: Diagnose, Clarify, Structure, Strengthen and Elevate. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build strong foundations in Hanyu Pinyin, character recognition and communication before progressing towards advanced reading comprehension, composition writing and PSLE Chinese examination readiness.

Whether your child is just beginning Primary 1 or preparing for the PSLE in Primary 6, our coaching is personalised to their learning needs while remaining fully aligned with the MOE curriculum.

The MOE Primary Chinese curriculum offers three different learning pathways to support students with varying language abilities.

  • Standard Chinese (华文) is the mainstream Mother Tongue programme followed by most students throughout primary school.
  • Higher Chinese (高级华文) is introduced from Primary 5 for students who demonstrate stronger Chinese language ability. It includes more advanced vocabulary, reading comprehension, composition writing and language application, with higher examination expectations.
  • Foundation Chinese (基础华文) is available from Primary 5 for students who require additional support in mastering core language skills while continuing to build confidence in practical Chinese communication.

Aspire Hub provides specialised coaching for all three tracks, ensuring every student receives teaching that matches both the MOE syllabus and their individual learning needs.

Schools determine Higher Chinese (高级华文) eligibility at the end of Primary 4, based on a student’s overall academic performance, including Mother Tongue and English, Mathematics and Science (EMS) results.

Students who qualify begin Higher Chinese in Primary 5, where they encounter more demanding vocabulary, comprehension passages, composition writing and language application tasks.

Our Higher Chinese tuition prepares eligible students for these increased expectations through advanced reading strategies, richer vocabulary development, stronger composition techniques and higher-level oral communication skills.

Our PSLE Chinese tuition prepares students for every component of the PSLE Chinese examination, ensuring they develop both language proficiency and examination confidence.

Students receive structured coaching in:

  • Oral Communication (口试), including Reading Aloud (朗读) and Video-Based Conversation (会话)
  • Listening Comprehension (听力理解)
  • Reading Comprehension (阅读理解)
  • Composition Writing (写作)

Beyond examination techniques, students strengthen vocabulary, language application, comprehension strategies, composition planning and communication skills. We prepare students taking Standard Chinese, Higher Chinese and Foundation Chinese, with lessons aligned to the latest MOE assessment requirements.

The PSLE Chinese Oral Examination uses the e-Oral format, which consists of two assessed components:

  • Reading Aloud (朗读) – 20 marks
  • Video-Based Conversation (会话) – 30 marks

Students first read a passage aloud before responding to questions based on a short video stimulus. The examination assesses pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, reasoning, language accuracy and the ability to communicate ideas confidently in Mandarin.

At Aspire Hub, our Primary Chinese oral tuition closely mirrors the actual examination format. Students practise under realistic examination conditions while receiving personalised feedback on pronunciation, tone, vocabulary usage, sentence structure and communication techniques.

According to the latest MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus, students are expected to recognise approximately 1,800–1,900 Chinese characters (识字) and write approximately 950–1,000 Chinese characters (写字) by the end of Primary 6.

Rather than relying on memorisation shortly before the PSLE, Aspire Hub introduces new vocabulary and writing targets progressively across every primary level. Students continuously revise previously learned characters while building stronger reading comprehension, vocabulary application and writing confidence throughout the programme.

Our Primary Chinese tuition programme follows the learning progression outlined in the MOE Primary Chinese Syllabus, ensuring students develop the appropriate language skills at every stage.

  • Primary 1 and 2 focus on Hanyu Pinyin, character recognition, handwriting, listening, speaking and building confidence in everyday Mandarin communication.
  • Primary 3 and 4 strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary development, language application, paragraph writing, oral interaction and higher-order thinking skills through increasingly challenging texts.
  • Primary 5 and 6 prepare students for the PSLE Chinese examination, integrating all six language abilities while developing advanced comprehension, composition writing, oral communication and examination strategies required for Standard, Higher and Foundation Chinese

Yes. Many students improve through consistent reading, regular Mandarin conversations at home and daily language practice.

However, Primary Chinese tuition provides structured guidance that is often difficult to replicate independently. Experienced teachers identify learning gaps early, correct pronunciation and tone, strengthen composition writing, improve reading comprehension and provide immediate personalised feedback based on each student’s progress.

For many students, this targeted support accelerates language development, builds confidence and develops the examination techniques required for long-term success in Primary Chinese and the PSLE Chinese examination.

Aspire Hub offers Primary Chinese tuition at multiple tuition centres conveniently located across Singapore, with branches situated near MRT stations for easy access.

Every Aspire Hub centre follows the same MOE-aligned curriculum, structured coaching methodology and small-group learning approach, ensuring students receive a consistent learning experience regardless of branch location.

Parents can choose the centre that best suits their home, workplace or child’s school. Visit our Branches page to find your nearest Aspire Hub tuition centre and explore available class schedules.

Enrolling in Aspire Hub Primary Chinese tuition is simple.

Book a trial class directly through our website or submit our enquiry form with your child’s primary level, preferred Aspire Hub branch and Chinese course track (Standard Chinese, Higher Chinese or Foundation Chinese).

Our academic advisors will recommend the most suitable programme based on your child’s current ability, learning goals and school requirements before arranging a trial lesson at your preferred tuition centre.

After completing Primary 6, many students continue with our Secondary Chinese Tuition programme to build on the foundations developed during primary school.
